Description (updated 26 Mar. 2025):
100% total weighting is the % of $ being invested in the equities/assets. The fund would realistically diversify the total Value in cash & other more liquid/stable assets to ensure stability & flexibility.
This hypothetical portfolio includes several stocks that are inherently risky, and many of them have consecutive unprofitable quarters/years.
My portfolio will be for the most part passively-managed, with the initial allocations placed in.
I will exclude taxes & fees from all the fund managers for ease sake.
3/13 of the Top Fund Managers ETFs include expense fees- these will not be calculated in the basic ROIs.
Several funds/stocks pay out dividends (11/20 for Adval Fund, 8/13 for Top Fund Managers). These will not be counted in basic ROIs, but would be included in the calculations of detailed ROIs.
The Purpose of this portfolio creation/fund manager challenge is to see how well the best fund managers in the entire world and myself will perform with all of our combined skills/talents.
2025 moving forward marks a unique time geopolitically, economically, and societally.
The markets are a fascinating journey in which everyone has their own glasses to view, experience, and critique them in their own way(s). I embrace them.
The Challenge
In this challenge, I am openly challenging several of the world’s top asset and fund managers to see who performs the best. I'm launching my Adval Fund against their best Funds/stocks. The tickers selected for this challenge were chosen deliberately because their returns are updated daily and are easy to track, unlike the often opaque reporting of hedge funds or venture capital firms. This ensures transparency and allows for real-time performance comparison.
The goal of this challenge is twofold: first, to test the resilience and effectiveness of my investment approach against some of the most renowned minds in the financial world; and second, to explore how different strategies perform under the unique economic, geopolitical, and societal conditions of 2025 and beyond. By comparing our returns, we can gain insights into the strengths and weaknesses of various investment philosophies, offering valuable lessons for investors navigating today’s complex markets. This challenge is not just a competition—it’s an opportunity to learn, adapt, and push the boundaries of what’s possible in portfolio management.

Evaluations/Thoughts:
- Week 1, ending March 28: Adval Fund: Variance: 3,503.02, Standard Deviation: 59.18. Relative Variability (Coefficient of Variation): 113% [as of 28 March eod]
Top Asset Managers Fund: Variance: 82,614.24, Standard Deviation: 287.42. Relative Variability (Coefficient of Variation): 140% [as of 28 March eod]
- Adval Fund's stock prices were more predictable and less spread out. Top Asset Managers Fund, on the other hand, stock prices were dominated by a few large values, making it more volatile and less representative of a “typical” value. Since Top Asset Managers Fund has a higher CV, it indicates greater relative variability compared to its mean, making it riskier.
Interesting that Adval fund was more predictable and less risky despite picking individual stocks as an individual invester yet still having a higher return. Albeit, this is only One week into this challenge/comparison.
Note that a vast majority of the week, both funds were in the positive (both ~1-2% ROI) until Friday- when the S&P 500 closed Down >2%. This can also be seen in the $SPY's weekly ROI of -1.48%.
- Week 2, starting March 30: Adval Fund: Variance: 5,260.36, Standard Deviation: 72.53. Relative Variability (Coefficient of Variation): 121% [as of 5 April eod]
Top Asset Managers Fund: Variance: 91,472.19, Standard Deviation: 302.44. Relative Variability (Coefficient of Variation): 152% [as of 5 April eod]
- Statistical Evaluation of ROI Percentages:
Adval Fund: Mean ROI: -12.55%, Variance: 93.14, Standard Deviation: 9.65, Coefficient of Variation: 76.89% (indicating high relative variability). Range: 2.57% (highest) to -28.21% (lowest), a spread of 30.78%.
Top Fund Managers Fund: Mean ROI: -16.23%, Variance: 43.66, Standard Deviation: 6.61, Coefficient of Variation: 40.73% (indicating moderate relative variability). Range: -4.79% (highest) to -26.70% (lowest), a spread of 21.91%.
Comparison: The Adval Fund has a higher mean ROI (-12.55% vs. -16.23%), but its higher variance (93.14 vs. 43.66) and standard deviation (9.65 vs. 6.61) reflect greater volatility. The Adval Fund’s Coefficient of Variation (76.89%) is nearly double that of the Top Fund Managers Fund (40.73%), indicating Adval’s returns are far more variable relative to its mean. The Adval Fund’s wider range (30.78% vs. 21.91%) further underscores its higher risk profile.
- Week 3, Volatility (Standard Deviation): Adval Fund: ~12.15%, Top Fund Managers: ~10.5%
Adval Fund: Higher risk (greater volatility and range) but with a potential for higher returns (best ROI of 8.03%)
Top Fund Managers: More consistent (lower volatility) but with no standout performers (best ROI only 0.42%)
Interestingly, the average Betas of each fund are as follows: Adval: 1.27, Top Fund Managers: 1.50. [updated 2025Apr13]
